The Helsinki Central Library Oodi has surpassed the traditional functional space of libraries by giving them the possibility to play games, watch movies, play chess, cook, and do all kinds of other activities. The dynamic public space is visible, attractive, accessible, and welcoming to all visitors, an open 'free living room'. The interior of the building, with its floating cloud-like white ceilings, holes in the roof warm lighting, and large, unevenly spaced steps, provides the public with the ultimate warmth and comfort, both visually and physically. During the cold winter months in Helsinki, the library becomes more like a 'home', a place of shelter for the public's physical and spiritual well-being.
