Huvila’s primary areas of research are information and knowledge management, social and participatory information practices, information work, knowledge organisation, documentation, and research data. Much of his focuses on archaeology and cultural heritage, archives, libraries and museums, and digital media. Huvila is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed papers including the 2008 paper on Participatory archives in the journal Archival Science.
