Judaism in Opera
International symposium
14-16 April 2015
On the occasion of the performance of Halévy's La Juive, Opera Vlaanderen, in cooperation with the European Academy of Music Theatre in Vienna and the Institute of Jewish Studies at the University of Antwerp, is holding an international symposium on the works of Jewish composers, authors and artists and Jewish motifs in opera.
The symposium focuses on the question of how Jewish artists and their cultural background and heritage translate to the world of opera. Both from a historical and a contemporary perspective, it examines how Jewry or the figure of the Jew are staged. There are lectures and contributions from directors, composers, intendants and internationally renowned experts from the academic world.
With the kind support of: Jewish Community Shomre Hadas (Antwerp), Barbara Schlaff and Martin Schlaff.
