‘Joodse Raden’ in West-Europa: een vergelijkend perspectief

In de periode na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd voornamelijk negatief geoordeeld over de rol van ‘Joodse raden’ in bezet Europa. Ze werden gezien als werktuigen in de handen van de Duitse bezetter, die hadden bijgedragen aan het maatschappelijk isoleren en deporteren van de Joden. De vertegenwoordigers van deze organisaties werden en worden vaak nog steeds beschouwd als collaborateurs. Laurien Vastenhout laat zien dat deze geschiedenis in werkelijkheid veel complexer is dan tot nu toe werd aangenomen. In deze lezing bespreekt ze de manier waarop de Joodse leiders in West-Europa een weg probeerden te vinden tussen de steeds verdergaande eisen van de bezetter en de wens om Joden hulp te verlenen. 

Laurien Vastenhout is onderzoeker bij het NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam. In de afgelopen jaren heeft haar onderzoek zich met name gericht op de geschiedenis van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in West-Europa, de Jodenvervolging, en het ontstaan en functioneren van ‘Joodse Raden’. In 2023 ontving ze een beurs van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) voor een nieuw onderzoeksproject naar ‘Joods’/’‘niet-Joods’ ‘gemengd gehuwden’ tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Haar boek Between Community and Collaboration: ‘Jewish Councils’ in Western Europe under Nazi Occupation (Cambridge University Press, 2022), ontving recentelijk de Yad Vashem International Book Prize for Holocaust Research.

De politiek van het kleinste kwaad. De Joodse Raad voor Amsterdam

Deze lezing draait om de meest voor de hand liggende vraag betreffende de Joodse Raad van Amsterdam: waarom werkte een gezelschap Joodse notabelen mee aan de uitstoting en deportatie van de Nederlandse Joden? Historici als Presser en De Jong meenden, en vele leken menen nog steeds, dat de leiding en medewerkers van de Joodse Raad allereerst zichzelf en hun naasten probeerden te redden; dat zij in essentie het algemeen belang van de Joden opofferden aan hun eigenbelang. Wie door de ogen van destijds kijkt, ziet dat de werkelijkheid complexer is. 

Bart van der Boom (1964) studeerde af in Geschiedenis (1988) en Amerikanistiek (1989) aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij promoveerde in 1995 aan de Universiteit Leiden, waar hij sinds 1998 werkzaam is als universitair docent Nederlandse Geschiedenis. Hij publiceerde zes boeken: Kees van Geelkerken. Rechterhand van Mussert (1990); Den Haag in de Tweede Wereldoorlog (1995); ‘Atoomgevaar? Dan zeker BB’. De geschiedenis van de Bescherming Bevolking (2001); ‘We leven nog’. De stemming in bezet Nederland (2003); ‘Wij weten niets van hun lot’. Gewone  Nederlanders en de Holocaust (2012) - bekroond met de Libris Geschiedenis Prijs - en De politiek van het kleinste kwaad. Een geschiedenis van de Joodse Raad voor Amsterdam 1941-1943 (2022), genomineerd voor de Libris Geschiedenis Prijs (shortlist).

On Thursday 23 May 2024 the Institute of Jewish Studies organizes for the sixteenth time an interdisciplinary conference at the University of Antwerp concerning Jewish Studies on the Low Countries. The purpose of the conference is to facilitate contacts between researchers working within this area of study.

We especially encourage young researchers to participate in the workshop. We also hope for contributions from more established researchers, in order to create a positive exchange between different research generations. We particularly invite papers and/or sessions that are explicitly comparative in character, and welcome themes and disciplines within Jewish Studies concerning the Low Countries. Proposals need not be limited to a specific historical period and presentations may include work in progress. Both individual and panel proposals are possible. The conference language is English.

Please note that the conference organizers cannot provide financial support to cover travel and accommodation of presenters or participants. 

Please submit an abstract of maximally 400 words and a short CV by 15 January 2024.
