From time to time, we like to put a LAB-Net colleague in the spotlight, as for us they make the difference. This time, it's Katherine Loens' turn.

After studying as a clinical laboratory technologist and biomedical sciences, she started working at the University of Antwerp. Via Em. Prof. Herman Goossens and Em. Prof. Greet Ieven, she got involved in the founding the NAACAP project. She then worked on the GRACE,  PREPARE, RECOVER, and Ecraid projects.

Hello Katherine. Tell us more about your job. What is your area of expertise?

My expertise mainly lies in developing, implementing and validating diagnostic tests for respiratory infections. I find it very fascinating. Respiratory infections are very common, yet it's not always clear what the best approach is. Some infections can be treated specifically, while others are treated symptomatically. Too many antibiotics are still being prescribed, my goal is to reduce that.

You have been working with us for almost 30 years, even before the official start of LAB-Net. What do you enjoy most about your work for LAB-Net?

I absolutely love working on new projects, as it allows me to keep learning. Everyone complements each other here in a way. For example, one colleague is an expert in antibiotic resistance, and my strong suit is validation and molecular tests. That is a good combination. Additionally, I can work independently, which is important to me.

What has been the most memorable moment in your job so far?

I have only positive memories linked to the GRACE project. It laid the foundation for many other EU-level projects. It was the first EU project on respiratory infections in primary care. We truly formed a close-knit family. I learned a lot, especially about project management.

Another thing I will never forget is the people who were driven into the triage center during COVID. They were mostly elderly people in wheelchairs, and who were scared of the outcome. I was involved in the testing and analyses during COVID, but it's the people who have stayed with me the most.

What do you find important in life?

I think it's important to always be open for discussion, and to not judge immediately. Additionally, I hope that people see me as someone warm and empathetic, someone who has compassion.

Outside of work, I am a true nature lover. I love going on walks in the beautiful landscapes when we are traveling. Nature always gives me a sense peace and amazes me.

A beach vacation is not really my thing however; I prefer active holidays. Nothing too touristy. Recently, I went to Thailand, that was wonderful!

Hope to see you soon on a hike!
