Em. Prof. Youri Glupczynski has received the Marshall and Warren Medal 2023 in recognition of this life-long contribution to the field of Helicobacter pylori research. The prize was awarded by Nobel Laureate, Professor Barry Marshall who co-discovered H. pylori.
Prof. Glupczynski pioneered Helicobacter research when he decided to dedicate his PhD thesis to this topic in the early 1990s. At a time when many gastroenterologists were still reluctant to accept the importance of Helicobacter pylori infection in the management of gastroduodenal diseases, Prof. Glupczynski shifted focus to the diagnosis and epidemiology of the disease and the importance of antimicrobial resistance in H. pylori as a major risk factor of eradication failure.
He initiated and co-led several multicentric studies to monitor the epidemiology of H. pylori resistance in Europe which could establish a close link between antimicrobial resistance and human antibiotic consumption in the community. From 2010 onward, he was also appointed as head of the National Belgian reference laboratory for Helicobacter pylori.
Today, his outstanding contributions over the past 4 decades have received well-deserved recognition.
The award ceremony took place on 9 September 2023 during the 36th Workshop of the European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group, held in Antwerp. The Laboratory of Medical Microbiology, UAntwerpen applauds their illustrious team member.
