Professor Sandra Van Puyvelde is a researcher at the Laboratory of Medical Microbiology of the University of Antwerp. Her research, in which she combines wet-lab and bioinformatics, revolves around the evolution of bacteria, how they spread and become resistant to antibiotics.
In episode 473 of the Universiteit van Vlaanderen podcast, Sandra is a guest speaker. She discusses the Salmonella bacteria and how the infection occurs. Sandra also elaborates on the different variants, including a more dangerous variant which is found in several African countries and has become resistant to antibiotics.
