Three members of the Law and Development Research Group, Dr. Kata Dozsa; Prof. Wouter Vandenhole and Assist. Prof. Gamze Erdem Türkelli have submitted expert advice to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child which is preparing a General Comment on Children’s Rights and the Environment with a Special Focus on Climate Change (General Comment No. 26). The research group members address in particular the extraterritorial obligation of the States to ensure and protect a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment as an integral part of children’s rights; the global responsibility of the States for harms caused by emissions to children; and the children’s rights approach to the climate crisis for achieving sustainable development.
The General Comment No. 26 is expected to be launched in 2023.
