Members of the Law and Development Research Group, Prof. Dr Gamze Erdem Türkelli and Michael G. Marcondes Smith organised a collective submission of input (link below) to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights regarding the Advisory Opinion on Climate Change and Human Rights requested by the Republic of Chile and the Republic of Colombia.
The input was written collectively by colleagues from the University of Antwerp, Queensland University of Technology, the University of Melbourne, and La Trobe University.
The text covered a variety of topics regarding states' human rights obligations in the face of a changing climate, such as duties of prevention and mitigation, the extraction of fossil fuel, planetary boundaries, gender and socio-economic inequalities, children's rights, access to justice, shared and differentiated human rights obligations, migration and forced displacement, reparations, precautionary principle, among other fundamental themes.
