The Laboratory of Microbiology, Parasitology and Hygiene (LMPH) is an interdepartmental group spanning the Departments of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences (PHAR). LMPH constitutes the Infectious disease cluster in the department of Biomedical Sciences and consists of parasitology research represented by Prof. G. Caljon (BMS); virology research by Prof. P. Delputte (BMS) and bacteriology research by Prof. P. Cos (PHAR).

The mission statement of LMPH across the 3 disciplines is to deliver key innovative elements with high translational potential to next generation therapeutics, diagnostics and vaccines using complementary and multidisciplinary approaches. The specific objectives are (i) understanding the immunological basis of infection and disease through the exploration of unique in-house infection models, (ii) identification of cutting-edge leads and their mode of action and resistance mechanisms, (iii) understanding the basis in the host (e.g. sanctuary sites) and pathogen (e.g.quiescence/persistence/tolerance/biofilms) underlying therapeutic and vaccine failure and (iv) strategic exploration of innovative diagnostic (pathogen detection and tests-of-cure) and vaccine target antigens for novel prophylactic approaches.
