Metrodora is the Health Humanities expertise centre at the University of Antwerp.
The centre focuses on education, research, and public engagement) and has a broad international network in both the academic world and the health and cultural sector.
As a field, Health Humanities reflects on contemporary issues concerning mental and physical health from the perspective of various disciplines. It is an interdisciplinary field that relies on the structural exchange of knowledge, insights, and methodologies from the (bio)medical sciences on the one hand, and humanities – with disciplines such as ethics, communication, philosophy, literature, sociology, disability studies, anthropology, history and art – on the other. Medical and clinical perspectives are thus complemented by philosophical, historical, anthropological, sociological, narratological and cultural perspectives.
In terms of research, the core focus revolves around developments and attitudes towards health, healthcare and medicine, and the knowledge production that results from these factors in relation to their cultural expressions in society, and in an array of experiences. The aim is to develop a theoretical understanding of themes such as health, illness, disability, patient experiences, sustainable care, life and death. Subsequently, there is always a concrete link to practices.
