MIGLOBA NETWORKING AND RESEARCH DAY – 16 January, 2025

We are thrilled to share the success of MIGLOBA Day 2025, which took place on Thursday, 16 January 2025, at the University of Antwerp’s Grauwzusters Building S. The event, organized by MIGLOBA: The Network on Migration and Global Mobility, brought together a diverse group of researchers and experts to reflect on key themes in migration and global mobility.

The day was an excellent opportunity to strengthen connections within the MIGLOBA network and explore the latest research and trends in the field. Participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions inspired by the four core MIGLOBA research themes:

1️⃣ Diversity and Civil Society

2️⃣ Social Inclusion and Migrant Populations

3️⃣ Global Mobility and Governance

4️⃣ Media and Mobility

The event began with coffee and registration, followed by four engaging presentations:

Presentation Highlights

Olivier Sterck (Institute of Development Policy, University of Antwerp & University of Oxford) shared his research on the Market Effects and Welfare Impacts of Cuts and Delays in Humanitarian Assistance, drawing on data from South-Sudanese refugees in Kakuma, Kenya. His findings shed light on the dramatic consequences of reduced aid and how market dynamics can partially mitigate these effects.

Noel Clycq (Department of Training and Education Sciences) presented his research on Out-of-School Learning? Lessons for Mainstream Education, exploring how community-based and mainstream schools address inequality and identity in their classrooms and what educators can learn from their shared experiences.

Sarah Anschütz (University of Antwerp & Utrecht University) captivated the audience with her talk on Blurring Borders: How Migrant-Background Youth Navigate ‘Homeland’ Connections Online and On the Move, highlighting the unique digital and mobility practices of Ghanaian-background youth in Europe and their implications for transnationalism.

Networking and Collaboration

The event concluded with a vibrant lunch and networking session, where participants exchanged ideas, forged new connections, and discussed future research collaborations.

We thank everyone who contributed to making MIGLOBA Day 2025 such a success. Your enthusiasm and participation have inspired us to continue fostering meaningful dialogue and research within the migration and global mobility community.
