We're happy to announce a new publication by Samuel Opono and Frank Ahimbisibwe

In their paper Protracted refugee situations and the shrinking durable solutions: could there be a ray of hope in local solutions?, the authors examine protracted refugee situations and the renewed debates surrounding durable refugee solutions. Despite international provisions, durable solutions have been slow to materialise, prompting a critical analysis of whether local solutions could offer a more feasible interim approach to supporting refugees.

Key insights:

  • The number of refugees in long-term displacement continues to rise, challenging the effectiveness of traditional durable solutions
  • Local solutions provide refugees with opportunities to be resilient but they are a temporary window for survival in the absence of durable solutions
  • National governments and the international community should continue working together to protect and empower refugees
