AIS 2023

The sixth edition of Asphalt Innovation Symposium (AIS2023) brought together experts to explore the latest in road engineering and ways to prevent ageing. The day started with a lively poster session and a relaxed coffee and tea break, giving participants a chance to look at new research. In the morning, we had two parallel sessions: "Current Research on Road Engineering and SuPAR" and "Ageing and How to Prevent It". Both sessions sparked interesting discussions and allowed for valuable knowledge sharing.

In the afternoon, we focused on the future of asphalt with three parallel sessions that encouraged everyone to join in and share their ideas. Attendees explored topics such as the future of asphalt pavements, asphalt emissions (fumes), and the resilience of infrastructures against climate change. These sessions were interactive, creating a space where participants could voice their insights and interests. The day ended with a final session to share all the ideas and reflections, leaving everyone inspired and excited for future advancements in the field.

AIS 2022

AIS 2022 was a great success!

After two years of virtual symposiums, we were happy to return to the physical format. The fifth edition of the Asphalt Innovation Symposium took place on December 15, 2022, at the University of Antwerp's city campus. Researchers, international guest speakers, and industry stakeholders presented their work, covering a wide range of topics including recent innovations, mix design, advancements in the bitumen industry, BIM, and LCA.

The highlight of the event was the parallel session where one of our PhD researchers, Georgios Pipintakos, defended his thesis in front of an international jury.

We are proud of the accomplishments of AIS 2022 and grateful for the support. Stay tuned for future updates and more exciting initiatives in asphalt innovation.

AIS 2021

Asphalt Innovation Symposium 2021 (AIS2021) was successfully organized on December 15 and 16, 2021. In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and our commitment to prioritizing the safety of all participants, both days of AIS2021 were conducted virtually.

During this two-day event, researchers from the University of Antwerp, alongside international guest speakers and industry stakeholders, shared their work and passion with a diverse audience. Engaging English and Dutch parallel sessions explored a wide range of topics, including sustainable and resilient cities, innovations, and fundamental research, providing valuable insights into the future of the asphalt sector.

We are proud of the success of AIS2021 and express our gratitude to all participants for their active engagement and valuable contributions. Thank you for your support and interest in the Asphalt Innovation Symposium. Stay tuned for future updates on upcoming events and initiatives as we continue to promote innovation and excellence in the asphalt industry.

AIS 2020

After the first two editions of the Asphalt Innovation Symposium in 2018 and 2019, the third edition was held on December 10, 2020. In this event, researchers of the University of Antwerp, international guest speakers, and industry stockholders gave an update regarding their research and innovative developments in the asphalt road construction sector.

This symposium was organized on an online platform with 41 presentations in 10 sessions.

AIS 2019

After the first edition of the Asphalt Innovation Symposium in 2018, the second edition took place on Thursday 12th of December 2019. On this day, researchers of UAntwerp and international guest speakers gave an update regarding their research and innovative developments in the asphalt road construction sector. The Road Engineering Research Section of EMIB would like to thank all participants for their presence.

AIS 2018

The first edition of the Asphalt Innovation Symposium (AIS2018) was organized on December 13, 2018. In this symposium, researchers from the University of Antwerp and international guest speakers presented their research and innovative developments in the asphalt sector.

The main focus of this symposium was to create a connection between the university and the asphalt industry in order to continue working together on new trends in road engineering.
