It is crucial to have good grip on the possibilities and upcoming innovations that make the transport supply more efficient, and the respective industrial-economic impact. At the same time, the evolution and type of transport demand need to be estimated, the determinants are to be identified, and the need for extra capacity and infrastructure are to be predicted.
In September 2010, the University of Antwerp (Department of Transport and Regional Economics) and BNP Paribas Fortis have teamed for a 5-years period to set up a Chair in transport, logistics and ports. The chair will was prolonged for two years; ending on 30/09/2021. In 2021, it was decided to prolong the current chair with another two years, covering two academic years for now, for the period starting on 01/10/2021 and ending on 30/09/2023.

This commitment to universities and education is proof that BNP Paribas Fortis is anchored in the Belgian society. The Chair Transport, Logistics strives to establish bridges between critical research, industry and education around new developments in the maritime and logistics sector. It develops relevant research for the clients of BNP Paribas Fortis and disseminates scientific knowledge.”
Vision
Combining the extensive knowledge about transport and logistics of the University of Antwerp with the interest of BNP Paribas Fortis in the development of quality support, research and scientific dissemination in Belgium results in the ability to react quickly and efficiently to new developments in the maritime and logistics world. The Chair Transport, Logistics and Ports undertakes research around port innovation. Within the chair, the promoters and the researchers wish to fine-tune excellent academic knowledge regarding modelling, collecting data, etc. and acquire new scientific insights and develop skills. Students acquire knowledge about research results during (guest) lectures and the involvement in projects. The chair allows to emphasize the development of competences. The research is not limited to (international) academia, it also contributes to social debate.
