To celebrate the International Mother Language Day on 21 February, the UAntwerp Faculty of Arts organises a full-day event on multilingualism. Since this topic often intersects with urban studies, the Urban Studies Institute is glad to support this event, and in particular the talk with Yaron Matras about his book Speech and the City.

You can choose to attend the full programme or attend just the section(s) of your interest.

Programme

12:30 - 2:00 p.m. Poetry Day - Faculty of Arts

Faculty students and staff recite their favourite (or their own) poems in their mother language. You are welcome to come listen.

3:00 - 4:30 p.m. Seminar

Master and PhD students will present their research on multilingualism in different contexts. Expertise centre OPEN will talk about accessible media and culture. More details will be announced later.

5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Talk with Yaron Matras

The linguist Yaron Matras is specialised in Romani, Kurdish and other Middle Eastern languages. During his academic career, he initiated several projects on multilingualism. In 2010, for instance, he launched the Multilingual Manchester project, which ran until 2021. This project aimed to promote awareness of language diversity in the Manchester city region and beyond.

We will have a discussion with Prof Matras following his most recent book Speech and the City (2024). After the talk, you are welcome to attend the reception.

All day: exhibition Chair vive / Levend vlees

To mark the twentieth anniversary of the death of Swiss poet Grisélidis Réal (1929-2005), students from the Master's in Translation, led by Philippe Vanhoof, have translated several poems into Dutch to give the Dutch-speaking target audience access to a previously unpublished literary voice.
