Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO) is a government agency that finances strategic and industrial research.
The larger part of VLAIO’s own budget is allocated to industrial R&D projects. Applications originate from industry, but are usually submitted in cooperation with a public research institution (university, university college,…), in which the research institution can act as a research partner or as a service provider. The success rate is quite high and submission is permanent. The funds intended for the public research partner are allocated through the industrial partner.
Apart from a number of (partially) SME-targeted projects, VLAIO also offers a number of doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships.
Furthermore, the VLAIO agency manages a number of programs on behalf of its financer, the Flemish government, including for example, agricultural research and TETRA programmes.
