The upper respiratory tract is the major point of entry as well as the infection site for microorganisms transmitted by aerosols or droplets. The nasopharyngeal microbiota also plays an important role in protecting the host from bacterial and viral (upper respiratory tract) infections. My research focused on the nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae and on their relation with the development of acute otitis media in young children. Additionally, we also looked on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the carriage of S. pneumoniae and SARS-CoV-2.
