The hybrid identity of the HIV/AIDS-patient: a longitudinal study of the impact of antiretroviral treatment on the life of HIV/AIDS-patients in sub-Saharan Africa.
Abstract
The general research aim is to undertake a sociological study of the impact of HIV/AIDS and the associated ART on the lives of those affected and more specifically on the identity reconstruction of HIV/AIDS patients receiving ART in sub-Saharan Africa. This research views ART not only as the turning point in the treatment of an 'ill body', detached from the social reality, but also as a turning point in the experience of AIDS as a chronic illness, embedded in this social reality. The study will attempt to draw an overall picture of the HIV/AIDS patient receiving ART as a 'social entity' with a chronic illness, and his/her consequent place and role in society. In practice, we will study the factors that positively affect the possibility of a successful treatment and the associated identity reconstruction.Researcher(s)

Non-uptake of counseling for HIV TB patients in South Africa: research to inform invention.
Abstract
In order to improve the outcomes of the South African public sector health programmes, from a theoretical point of view it is important to gain a better understanding of the complex relationship between all relevant factors. Statistical modelbuilding is an essential part of it. In practical terms, the study aims to evaluate and refine the intervention to ensure its improvement before making recommendations for its wider implementation in Soutern Africa.Researcher(s)

The elaboration and the implementation of the deontology in big law firms against the background of structural changes in the lawyers' practice.
Abstract
The growth of law firms and the emergence of new partnerships have strained the profession's individualistic approach to lawyer regulation. To what extent had the rationalization of law firm management extented to the creation of specialized structures for self-regulation? What are the incentives? How effective are (in)formal procedures and structures in promoting ethical conduct within law firms (in comparison with the traditional practice of the `sole practitioner')?Researcher(s)

Temporary protection of de facto-refugees in the European Union : the development of a common instrument to deal with massive inflows of refugees, within the framework of conflict prevention and conflict resolution.
Abstract
In the nineties, the conflicts in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, and especially the mass displacements they have produced, have stressed the need to deal with situations of large-scale influx. During the conflicts, the reaction of the European Union Member States has been the introduction of temporary protection for the displaced persons. However, those temporary protection regimes have not been developed in a concerted way but individually. Only now the Member States are working on the harmonisation of their policy towards displaced persons coming from conflict areas. This research will address the measures the European Union is taking or should take for the establishment of a joint temporary protection policy, as well as the efforts for equitable `burden-sharing'. Doing so, two main questions will be tackled. Firstly, aiming at the well-reception of future mass refugee flows, what should be the content of such a common European instrument? Secondly, how can this instrument be fitted into a `comprehensive approach' entailing conflict prevention and resolution in the region of origin? This second question refers to the growing need for the linkage of the European Union's internal and external policy. In other words, how can a temporary protection policy towards displaced persons, principally a matter of Justice and Home Affairs, be linked to the mechanisms for conflict management of the Common Foreign and Security Policy?Researcher(s)

Excessive burden of indebtness
Abstract
From a legal viewpoint , 'schuldoverlast' (excessive burden of indebtness) is narrowly defined as: have been a victim of at least four seizures by a bailiff. The purpose of this research is to come to a more social description of this phenomenon, by using literature and existing (raw) data material.Researcher(s)

Internationalisation of professional regulation.
Abstract
We are concerned to clarify the forms in which professional expertise succesfully internationalizes. We will also analyse the instruments of internationalization. We intend to begin with the legal instruments but we will also consider the limitations of law in internationalization processes, what alternatives exist when legal procedures are found lacking and what can be done in the field of education and formation.Researcher(s)
