Optimal landuse in and around European port regions: The search for a sustainable development for both region and port. 01/01/2003 - 31/12/2004

Abstract

This research project looks into the simultaneously evolving spatial systems region and port in large European port areas. Possibly a spatial conflict will present itself because of the enormous need for space resulting from both systems. On the other hand, to co-existence of city and neighbouring port results in quite a few advantages. As to fully picture the complete relationship, we will approach the developments from different dimensions. Resulting from empirical resarch and international cooperation-alliances, it is our goal to put forward some policy guidelines that will handle thus universal trouble-spot.

Company logistics costs and transport policy: the role of inventories and delivery times in case of multimodal choice 01/01/2001 - 31/12/2004

Abstract

Inventory costs and delivery times are important determinants of the toal logistic performance of a company. Moreover, both inventory costs and delivery times are closely related to modal choice decision making. A current problem to forecasting the fluctuations in demand and delivery time. With respect to both factors, several theoretical assumptions can be made. Related to above-statedproblem are a number of subproblems which are also important: e.g. such issues as optimal delivery quantitiy and order date, both are strongly related to the characteristics of the delivery time; cost/time of inventory keeping; importance of safety stocks and safety delivery times; risks and shortage costs and costs of late deliveries; and influence of new developments in logisitic management (time-based competition, just-in-time delivery and zero inventories, role of new information technologies, web applications). Besides theoretically analyzing and modelling the importance of inventories and deliverytimes with respect to transport decisions, the present project aims to test the proposed findeings by means of empirical evidence taken at company level. The obtained results will be used to answer a number of policy relvant questions regarding transport and mobility by means of simulations (e.g. Which government measures will influence the logistic trade-off between road and inland waterways? Whichgovenment actions will convince logistic managers to opt for inland waterways or rail instead of raodtransport?)

Economy and employment in Antwerp 01/07/2000 - 31/12/2002

Abstract

Within the Social Impulse Fund (SIF-Policyplan for Antwerp 2000-2002) this study investigates on the economy and employment in Antwerp. The study should lead to relevant material for the Database Social Planning of the Company for City Development Antwerp and also lead to a better understanding of the specific Antwerp situation with respect to economy and the labour market.

Storage costs and modal choice-making: a theoretical and empirical busisness logistic analysis of the influence of storages on transport mode selection 01/01/2000 - 31/12/2001

      Abstract

Storage costs form an important part of the total logistic cost of a company. Moreover, storage costs are closely related to modal choice decision-making. A current problem relates to forecasting the fluctuations in demand and delivery time. With respect to both factors, several theoretical assumptions can be made. Related to the above-stated problem are a number of subproblems which are also important: e.g. such issues as optimal delivery quantity and order date, cost of storage keeping, importance of security stocks, risks and costs of storage shortage, and influence of new developments in logistic management (just-in-time delivery, pursuit of zero storage option, role of new information technologies). Besides theoretically analysing and modelling the importance of storage's on transport decisions, the present project aims to test the proposed findings by means of empirical evidence taken at company level.
