Expertise
Geofrey Makenga is senior researcher at the Global Health Institute, University of Antwerp. He is trained as medical doctor (MD), vaccinologist and a clinical epidemiology specialist. He achieved his medical degree in 2010 at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam Tanzania, and he successfully graduated a second level master’s degree on Vaccinology and Pharmaceutical clinical development, at the University of Siena, Italy in 2016. He obtained his PhD degree on clinical epidemiology at the University of Antwerp, Belgium in 2023. Dr. Makenga has over 12 years of clinical research experience plus regulatory affairs for both vaccines and pharmaceuticals. His interest is on infectious disease prevention and control. In this, he has been involved as an investigator in clinical trials of pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenza (Hib) vaccines, and pharmaceuticals for prevention of malaria in pregnancy and in school aged children. Dr. Makenga has led operational implementation research studies on Intermittent Preventive Treatment of malaria in school aged children (IPTsc) in Tanzania, and supported the Tanzanian NMCP’s preventive therapies policy and plans for IPTsc implementation scale up. He serves as a member of the malaria case management technical working group for NMCP-Tanzania.
