Jelle is a senior researcher at the Laboratory of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology under supervision of prof. Sarah Lebeer. His research focuses on the vaginal microbiome, with an emphasis on the beneficial role of Lactobacillaceae and their antimicrobial peptides and molecules. He aims to better understand how these beneficial bacteria can protect against disease and explores their potential as live biotherapeutics or next generation probiotics, with a key focus on assessing their safety, efficacy, and the potential risks related to the spread of antibiotic and antifungal resistance.
