Expertise

The researcher’s expertise focuses on microbiome research, specifically the vaginal microbiota, with an emphasis on the beneficial role of Lactobacillaceae and their antimicrobial peptides and molecules. His work includes the discovery and study of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) that produce bacteriocins and other specialized metabolites (e.g. natural antibiotics, antifungals, …), as well as the elucidation of their mode of action. He aims to better understand how these beneficial bacteria can protect against disease and explores their potential as live biotherapeutics or next generation probiotics, with a key focus on assessing their safety, efficacy, and the potential risks related to the spread of antibiotic and antifungal resistance.
