Implication of supermarketization on food and nutrition security of the urban population: The case of Nairobi city in Kenya. 01/11/2024 - 30/09/2026

Abstract

Increasing urbanization and transformations in food markets have led to changes in the food system and resulted in transformation of the food retail system from traditional retail to supermarketization thereby compromising food and nutrition security (FNS). Food and nutrition security has become increasingly important and a key goal in food systems since almost half of the global population now lives in cities. However, the nature of this transformation on FNS in the urban areas is not clear and literature on understanding urban food systems is inadequate. This has created policy deficiency on the design of an arrangement model that sustains a niche for small retailers in the face of supermarketization. Using a mixed methods approach, this study aims at addressing this gap in research by analyzing the relationship between food environment and the food and nutrition security of urban dwellers using the case of Nairobi city Kenya. The study will specifically analyse the power relations of actors in the food system, the influence of supermarketization on the FNS and the socio-cultural food practices of the urban population.
