My research is situated in the neuromotor pediatric rehabilitation, more specific in children with cerebral palsy and Dravet syndrome. I mainly focus on functional mobility, more specific the biomechanics and metabolics during walking.
Level of physical activity in relation to cardiorespiratory fitness in 6 to 8 year old ambulatory children with cerebral palsy.
Abstract
Compared to previous generations, children show increasing inactivity which puts them at risk for several health issues related to a hypoactive lifestyle. Children with neuromuscular diseases, such as Cerebral Palsy, are even at higher risk. Recently first Cerebral Palsy specific phyiscal activity and exercise guidelines were presented. Before these guidelines can be clinically implemented, insights in (hypo)active lifestyle are nescessary. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the level of physical activity in ambulatory children with CP during the first years of primary school (6-8 years old) in Flanders and to study the relation with cardiorespiratory fitness and overweight. Secondary we aim to establish a clinically applicable protocol for the evaluation of cardiorespiratory fitness in children with CP and to test the implementation in the CP Reference Centers of Antwerp and Leuven.Researcher(s)
