What can we find here?
This webpage summarises all information about my participation in conferences. Thus, an overview of past and planned conferences is available. From past conferences, you can find a link to the paper.
Hopefully we can meet at a future conference.
Overview of conferences
A few abbreviations that I use in my recent works are:
- SH = Space Heating
- SC = Space Cooling
- DHW = Domestic Hot Water
- CHDC = Combined Heat Distribution Circuit. This is a collective heating system in apartment buildings that has one supply pipe that distributed heat for both SH and DHW.
- BHP = Booster Heat Pump. This is a decentral heat pump that boost the central supply temperature to the required temperature for DHW in the appartment. There are also BHP that boost/decrease the temperature for SH / SC, but these types are not within the scope of my past research.
- RL = Reinforcement Learning. This is a Machine Learning technique that learns how to control a given environment based, among other things, on the states it can observe, the actions it can perform and the reward function.
This table gives an overview of planned conferences and study days in 2023:
When? | Conference / study day | Where? | Title of presentation (link to paper) | Topic |
---|---|---|---|---|
15 November 2023 | Huizingen, Belgium | No submission (study day) | Deep dive into renewable thermal energy, explore the technological status and share concrete experiences from industry (such as pharma and food), as well as industrial heat production and storage. In the afternoon, the focus lies on security of supply thanks to the North Sea and innovative technologies such as HVDC, hydrogen and circular battery containers. We will also visit the Concept Center Siemens. |

21 June 2021 | Online | CHDC + BHP: What is the performance of BHPs for DHW and how to model it in Matlab? Here I also calculated the potential energy recuperation when the indoor excess heat is used for DHW production. | ||
1 - 3 September 2021 | Bruges, Belgium | CHDC + BHP: The sizing of the BHP has a great influence on the performance, as well as the regime temperature. The main outcome of this study was that the central supply temperature should be as low as possible, as this benefits the overall energy performance. | ||
22 - 25 May 2022 | Rotterdam, The Netherlands | CHDC: Can't we just use decentralised DHW storage tanks instead of the decentralised BHP? Yes! And especially with smart rule-based control and sizing, we can save up to 35% of the primary energy required. | ||
17 - 20 October 2022 | Brussels, Belgium | CHDC + RL: How can we teach an RL agent to control the CHDC with decentralised DHW storage tanks? This was quite a struggle to make it work, as the environment is partially observable, there are many non-linearities and thermal inertia. However, with the new GALER approach and by giving the agent more flexibility, it was possible to save up to 23% compared to current practice. It is now the goal to save even more in future work! | ||
22 - 24 May 2023 | Torino, Italy | No submission | DISTRICT ENERGY : THE LOCAL SOLUTION TO GLOBAL CHALLENGES | |
4 - 6 September 2023 | Shanghai, China | Enabling space cooling in combined heat distribution circuits by grouping same temperature demands | CHDC + SC: Typically, the CHDC is designed to distribute SH and DHW. However, with the decentralised DHW storage tanks, there is a possibility to divide the day into times of DHW and times of lower temperatures (results of CLIMA 2022). Now, in this research, we are investigating the possibility to distribute SC in summer, while still guaranteeing DHW comfort to end-users! |
