Social and economic impact of ageing in Flanders and Europe. How can policy respond at the Flemish level.
Abstract
Increase in life expectancy in the next generations is having a strong impact on the level of care especially needed in the group of the oldest old. A crucial research and policy question deals with the sources of care giving and especially with the internal division of labour. Our contribution to this larger research project is limited to the in depth study of informal care, more specifically the care given in te household and in the social network. What are the prospects of social care in Flanders in particulare and in Europe in general? Is it possible to forecast the level of social and community care? Were are the friction points that hinder the development of social care and were to find windows of opportunities to foster social care?Researcher(s)

Social capital versus social-economic determination European comparative research on the performance of democracies.

New prior conditions for an emancipation policy ?
Abstract
In this project we would like to investigate the consequences of the growing multiplicity of social positions of women for the emancipation policy. We suspect that the perspective of unequal chances doesn't provide an exclusive explanation for the differences between women. In our opinion a new notion of emancipation is developing in our society, whereby it gets increasingly difficult to deduce the level of emancipation from the participation on paid and unpaid work. In this project we investigate this hypothesis: which concepts of emancipation can we distinguish in the lives of women, also from the point of view of their partner? This question will be answered by the use of qualitative research. Narrative interviews will be done, whereby the total number of interviews will depend on the amount of new information every new interview brings. We think this number will be 15 or 20, and maybe 30. This project is subdivided in phases. Those phases will end up in separate texts, which will open up the discussion. In the definitive report the discussion will be formulated 'sharp'.Researcher(s)

Divorce in Flanders. Development of a typology and analysis of the effects on the relation between family and policy.
Abstract
This research project aims at filling the voids in our knowledge about one of the most typical demographic processes of our time, i.e. (legal) separation. Taking into account the most recent data, one can safely say that at least one in four marriages is dissolved by the partners within a period of 25 years. We shall start from the assumption that the social cost of these divorces varies, e.g. according to the length of the marriage, the presence and age of any children, the reserves that each of the partners has accumulated during the marriage, the support that is received after the divorce from family and local networks. By analysing existing databases we intend to further develop this typology and to study the social distribution of the types. Moreover, we intend to find out to what extent an institutional view of marriage, which is reflected in various instruments of settlement after divorce, is still sustained by the population.Researcher(s)

Family dissolution in Flanders. Diversity and effects on the relationship between the family and the state.
Abstract
There is an obvious lack of information on separation and divorce in this country. The latest development of crude divorce figures (3.5 per 1000 of population in 1995) urges us to fill the missing links in our understanding of the phenomenon. Taking into account that presumably one out of 4 marriages is dissolved by divorce in a period of 25 years after marriage, we consider our first task to develop a typology of family dissolution. The societal costs of all those divorces vary according to the duration of these marriages, the presence of children and their ages, the economie position and social rights developed by each partner during the marriage. Also we consider the modes of reorganisation after the dissolution to be crucial in defining the societal costs .ex.; the eventuality of a new partner relationship, the financial flows between the two former households, the support found in the family and local network. We envisage to work out this typology on the basis of vital statistics and of the database of the Panel Study on Belgian Households. Moreover we will develop a specific battery of questions designed to gain information on the public acceptance of an institutional interpretation of family life. In this way we try to grasp the tension field between private life-courses acad the social architecture, i.e. the rules and philosophy of our family and divorce laws and of our welfare state. An additional spin-off of this project is the continuity of a long term project, the Psbh, and the construction of a database which is more apt to be analysed on a regional basis.Researcher(s)

Measuring well-being : the development of questions on support-networks.
Abstract
This project aims to develop a battery of questions on well being, restricted to support-networks, in collaboration with actors of the social planning departments of the Flemish Government. Since the idea of survey indicators is relatively new in Flemish social planning practice, we have first to start a process of evaluation of the usefulness of this instrument for social policy. We argue on the basis of examples, formed in the literature and developed from our data-base (the Panel Study of Belgian Households).Researcher(s)

Abstract
Our purpose is to explore the phenomenon of growing very old from the point of view of the child-generation, using thereby information from the PSHB. A description of the childgeneration will be based on the first wave results. By inserting a specific module in the questionnaire of the second wave, we will collect more in-depth information on intergenerational relations. We will also clarify the boundaries of the problem definition.Researcher(s)
