Learning outcomes
Dutch-taught Bachelor of Biochemistry and Biotechnology
1. The Bachelor can apply knowledge of and insight in general natural science courses (physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology) in a well-described biochemical and biotechnological context.
2. The Bachelor has a good understanding of the structural organization levels and structure-function relations in organisms, tissues and cells. The Bachelor has thorough knowledge of the subcellular molecular structures that form the basis for biochemical/biotechnological processes in cells. The Bachelor knows the importance of the transfer of genetic information and the translation of this information which is necessary for the functioning of biological systems.
3. The Bachelor can combine and use the above-mentioned knowledge to critically analyze and interpret a biochemical/biotechnological problem autonomously or in a team. For familiar problem types, the Bachelor is able to draw conclusions at a theoretical level.
4. The Bachelor can accurately apply general and specific biochemical laboratory techniques taking into account the generally applicable and biochemical safety regulations.
5. Under guidance, the bachelor can design a scientific experiment, practically execute it in a laboratory and critically analyze and interpret the relevant obtained data. For familiar experimental set-ups, the Bachelor is able to draw conclusions from the obtained data. In doing all this the Bachelor takes into acocunt the fundamental methods typical for experimental work and reasoning.
6. The Bachelor has sufficient basic knowledge of biostatistics and bioinformatics and the according software programs to solve a specialized scientific problem.
7. The Bachelor can independently obtain scientific information via laboratory manuals and literature in Dutch and in English specialist magazines and process it, for instance in a literature study. The Bachelor is aware of the importance of lifelong learning and of following new developments in the domain of biochemistry and biotechnology.
8. The Bachelor is able to accurately record technical data and results of one's own experiments in a labjournal so that these can be consulted by others.
9. The Bachelor can give a written report in Dutch on one's own laboratory results and can orally present these to colleagues.
10.The Bachelor can reflect on bioethical aspects related to scientific research and the use of cells and organisms in biotechnology. The Bachelor has insight in ideological and multicultural themes and their current societal implications.
