Let the adventure begin
My time in Belgium, particularly at the University of Antwerp, was a journey of personal and academic growth. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with open arms during the Welcome Week—a truly pivotal event in my experience. It was during this week that I met many friends who I still keep in contact with throughout my studies here. The event was filled with activities that made it easy to meet fellow students, explore the vibrant city, and feel a sense of belonging right from the start. The energy was contagious, and I quickly felt at home in this new environment.
Work, study, play: Finding the perfect mix
The Master’s program itself was both challenging and rewarding. The courses were designed to push my limits, encouraging critical thinking and deeper exploration of the subjects. I appreciated the balance between theory and practical application, and the professors were always supportive, offering guidance whenever needed. Beyond academics, I also took on a job as a student worker and became an ambassador for both the university and the city. Balancing work, studies, and ambassador duties was challenging at times, but it was also incredibly rewarding and fun. The experience taught me how to manage my time effectively while being actively involved in the community.
Lost in translation? Not here
As someone who didn’t speak Dutch when I first arrived, I was initially concerned about the language barrier. However, this concern proved to be unfounded. The people in Antwerp are so open and welcoming that I quickly felt supported, regardless of my language skills. The sense of community here is remarkable, and it made adapting to life in Belgium feel much easier.
Antwerp: A city full of surprises
One of the highlights of my experience was exploring Antwerp itself. The city is a perfect blend of modernity and history, with hidden gems at every turn. My favorite spots included the Grote Markt, where I would often unwind after a long day of lectures, and the quiet, picturesque parks that offered a peaceful escape. And of course, Antwerp has an abundance of cute, cozy cafes that quickly became my go-to spots to relax, study, and catch up with friends. The cost of living in Antwerp was manageable, though budgeting was necessary, especially for groceries and socializing. Overall, the experience was invaluable, both academically and personally.
Making my own path
Looking back, my time at the University of Antwerp not only shaped my academic future but also deepened my understanding of different cultures, perspectives, and how to adapt in an ever-changing world. It was an experience that taught me the importance of connection, flexibility, and resilience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
