Historical frame of reference

The Bachelor has demonstrable basic knowledge of fundamental developments in world and European history since Antiquity and the skills to efficiently extend this knowledge in function of a personal chronological, geographical or thematic specialisation.

1. The Bachelor has a basic knowledge of world history in general and of the dynamic exchanges that have taken place during the course of that history between European and extra-European cultural traditions.

2. The Bachelor has ready knowledge of historical facts and insights with a well-developed spatial, chronological and thematic frame of reference and has advanced knowledge of a period and a domain (social and economic, cultural or political history).

3. The Bachelor shows continuous scientific curiosity for historical knowledge and has the skills to efficiently expand this knowledge of and insight in historical phenomena.

Historical-critical thinking

The Bachelor has a strong ability for problem-setting. They can articulate a status quaestionis of the historical debate starting from an original research question that they developed with guidance. Building on this they are able to find, select, analyse and synthesise a multitude of textual and non-textual information in a historically critical way. The Bachelor can also communicate this (orally and in writing) to a specialized and a non-specialized audience.

4. The Bachelor has the knowledge, skills and attitude to think critically and historically contextualising.

5. The Bachelor can develop a simple historical problem and develop it into a scientific study.

6. The Bachelor can understand and follow scientific debates in international specialized literature (in Dutch, English and French).

7. The Bachelor can form a coherent image of the status quaestionis of a particular historical problem, debate or concrete theme, based on information collected from an abundance of channels and sources of information.

8. The Bachelor has a basic knowledge of historical criticism, historiography, the main historical auxiliary sciences and the main heuristic auxiliary instruments.

9. The Bachelor can apply the basic principles of historical method to concrete historical and current problems and sources.

10. The Bachelor has a strongly developed critical attitude towards transmitted knowledge, opinions, methods, theories, models and concepts, historical aspect of language and towards its different sources and information carriers.

11. The Bachelor has the attitude to actively participate in the scientific debate in their discipline.

Research skills

The Bachelor can efficiently apply major research methods and auxiliary sciences when analysing historical and current problems starting from the spatial and temporal identity of the source material.

12. The Bachelor has the basic knowledge of and insight in historical auxiliary sciences and can efficiently expand this knowledge and insight.

13. The Bachelor can apply auxiliary sciences that are vital to any form of historical scientific research, such as palaeography, iconography and quantitative methods.

14. The Bachelor has a basic knowledge of digital history and digital methods for heuristic, analytical and communicative purposes.

15. The Bachelor can work independently and in a team.

16. The Bachelor can apply the research skills outside of his/her field of study.

17. The Bachelor has a strong analytical and synthesizing capacity and can articulate complex files clearly and correctly orally and in writing, for a specialized and a non-specialized audience.

18. The Bachelor is able to keep their expertise up-to-date in a process of lifelong learning.

Multi-disciplinarity

The Bachelor can explain historical developments by combining his/her historical insight with relevant theories and insights from other disciplines, in particular human and behavioural sciences.

19. The Bachelor has a basic knowledge and elementary insights in the broad domain of behavioural and social sciences, such as social sciences, economics, philosophy and social geography and can integrate insights from behavioural and cultural sciences in historical research.

20. The Bachelor has an open mind, an inquisitive attitude and is alert for recent developments in his/her own field of study, in the behavioural and social sciences and in society in general.

Place in society

The Bachelor has insight in the place and the role of the past in broader social developments (local and global) and in the relationship between historical research and method and the presence and function of the past and history in popular culture, media, politics, education etc. They can apply their historical-critical thinking in the work field and in the general social debate.

21. The Bachelor has a great general interest in contemporary society and has historical insight into different fundamental developments and trends in a number of important sectors of contemporary social and cultural life.

22. The Bachelor can participate in the broad social debate from a historical perspective, based on their knowledge and skills.

23. The Bachelor is able to flexibly apply historical knowledge and historical skills to situations outside the academic historical scene.

24. The Bachelor has acquired a subtle and respectful attitude towards the social and philosophical pluralism of modern society.

25. The Bachelor has a number of historical competences that can be put to use in a broad field of professions, such as quickly recognizing patterns in complex information, placing current phenomena in the broader context and in their development, distinguishing main issues from side-issues and forming a synthesis.
