Quality assurance and figures

At the University of Antwerp we ensure the quality of our programmes. Every programme goes through a six-year quality assurance cycle.

In year three, we review the quality assurance of the programme during the internal process monitoring and control. In the spring of 2020 this was done for the Bachelor (NL) and the Master of Biomedical Sciences (NL and ENG).

A peer review in year six concludes the cycle. The study programme conducts a self-reflection and has discussions with internal and external experts and with an independent student. On the 17th and 18th of April 2024 the peer review team visited the Bachelor (NL) and the Master of Biomedical Sciences (NL and ENG) and decided to confirm its confidence in the programme.

Conclusions of the peer review team

Biomedical Sciences is a high-level programme, thoughtfully constructed with a passionate teaching team. Students can count on a strong development of their research skills in addition to a solid theoretical scientific background. Given the impact of a biomedical scientist's work on society, the programme explores how to make the theme of ‘scientific integrity’ more visible in the curriculum.

The master's programme offers plenty of choices. Two of the four majors in the master's programme are organised in English and have great international appeal. Because of the importance of academic English in the master's programme and in later careers, the programme wants to focus on this even earlier in the study programme. Possibilities for a master's thesis abroad will be further facilitated. Wider career opportunities besides a PhD will be highlighted through guest speakers, alumni, examples in class and company visits. Different ways to reactivate the alumni association will be explored.

Care for students is very comprehensive considering attention is paid to shortcomings in prior knowledge, to questions on the study trajectory, to psychosocial needs and an ‘honours programme’ is organized for students who want to take on an extra challenge. In coming years, the course programme will continue working on selection and preparation modules and a portfolio system enabling students to map their competences. At ‘Campus Drie Eiken’ students can follow classes in a renewed learning environment. There are many opportunities for students to participate and have their voices heard. Teachers and the programme will work on improvements based on comments and data-driven findings. Given the success of the programme, there will be an exploration how to continue qualitatively embedding insights into the professional field and practical skills in the curriculum.
