Micro-credential: Transport and location

Course content

This course discusses the methods and results of spatial economic research and new evolutions in the discipline, with special attention for applications in transport. We elaborate on the parameters used in the main classic location theories, as well as on their relationship with the transport sector. Applications in related sectors, such as retail and industrial real estate, will also be discussed.
The urban geographic part of the course focuses on urban competition and global city networks. A visit to the London City and Docklands, or a strategic urban development project in Paris, will teach the students to interpret the spatial dynamics and urban problems in different neighbourhoods of a world city.
The European regional economic differences that drive Flemish regional policies and management complete the course.

Evaluation

An oral exam with written preparation counts towards 100% of the final grade. Besides simple knowledge reproduction, the students need to make connections between the different lectures, provide original examples of the concepts and theories discussed during the lectures, be able to link the lectures to the excursion, and be able to refer to current events relevant to the course.

Participation in the excursion is mandatory. Only in exceptional cases, e.g. health reasons, the excursion can be replaced by an alternative.

Upon request, an alternative form of evaluation can be provided for working students or people abroad.
