From 19 to 23 August 2024, the Summer School Animal Law, Rights and Representation offered an intensive programme of 5 days of lectures and workshops on different aspects of animal (rights) law.
Students dove into the emerging field of animal rights law from a transnational perspective and were familiarized with the basics of animal rights law, got to know about issues concerning the representation of animals in court, and studied the transnational aspects of the law addressing animals. They also got the chance to interact with practitioners and animal law scholars, amongst which the directors of the Cambridge Centre for Animal Rights Law. The aim is to give a comprehensive and critical overview of the relevant theories and laws addressing animals, including supranational, international, and national perspectives.
Reactions from participants
A very good course when you are interested in knowing more about animals, their rights and whether people can represent them in court. We talked about different approaches and the conclusion is simple: animals need to have strong rights.

Short and intense experience, innovative themes and exceptional people! I hope to return to Antwerp!

To me this was an incredibly stimulating week, with many opportunities to not only learn about, but also reflect upon, a topic that interests me a lot. The presentations were diverse, covered a lot of different aspects of the topic at hand, and were taught in an engaging way by all the guest speakers. I would not hesitate to register again if ever an interesting topic comes along in any of the summer or winter schools!
