We’d like to obtain the AnySurfer label for the www.uantwerpen.be website. AnySurfer is a quality label for websites that are accessible to people with disabilities.
To obtain it, the website must meet a number of technical and editorial conditions.
That’s why it’s important that our web editors follow the guidelines below consistently:
- Write meaningful links (see also Tip 7 of the web editing tips).
- Include the file type (Word, PDF, jpg, etc.) in the link text when you make a file downloadable. Include the size of the file too. In short: always mention the file type and size in brackets after the call to action and include this info in the link. Download the brochure (PDF - 5 Mb)
- Always enter subheadings in the 'header 2’ style using the 'format' button in the editor.
- Use lists (see also Tip 6).
- Make sure all images have meaningful alt tags! An alt tag describes what’s in the photo and is a maximum of 80 characters long. It should consist of a few meaningful words. No need for full sentences. If an image is also a link, the alt tag should focus on the link function. Make it clear in the alt tag what will happen if someone clicks on the image. For a print icon, for example, use the alt tag 'Print' and not the more descriptive 'Printer'. For photo galleries, one general description of the gallery is sufficient. The remaining alt tags can be left empty. Complex images like organisational charts and diagrams should be described in text form. This can be done on a page behind the image.
