The University of Antwerp’s Bioinformatics Core facility BIOMINA is looking for a full-time skilled and motivated Bioinformatician to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate has a background and deep interest in bioinformatics. This position requires a unique blend of technical expertise and a commitment to support the UAntwerp life science community.

Position

The position includes tasks equally divided over two projects:

  • setting up an online reproducible repository with commonly used pipelines within our network (BIOMINA portal) and functioning as an overall BIOMINA support (bio)informatician;
  • setting up a user management system on small scale compute/storage infrastructure and maintaining it.

Tasks for these projects include:

  • Establish and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the users making use of our HPC system and platform
  • Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues as they arise
  • Ensure data security, backup, and recovery procedures are in place
  • Implement, update, and optimize bioinformatics tools and pipelines
  • Support research groups & bioinformaticians with the analyses of “omics” data (depending on the demand)
  • Interact with bioinformaticians and researchers to understand their computational needs
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in the field of IT systems administration

Profile

  • You have a professional bachelor’s degree in (bio)informatics, computer science, or a related field or equivalent competences gained through prior work experience
  • You have basic knowledge of molecular biology or are eager to learn.
  • Experience with and knowledge of system administration is a plus, but interest and motivation to learn is more important
  • You have good oral and written knowledge of English and Dutch
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation. You are excellent in problem-solving and have good communication skills, work well independently and as part of a scientific team. You have strong skills in planning and organisation.
  • You are eager to learn and implement new technologies/tools, keep up to date with latest developments
  • You have knowledge of programming languages such as Python, R, bash ….
  • You are familiar with version control systems (e.g., Git)
  • You are familiar with or are willing to learn common bioinformatics tools and databases
  • You are familiar with Linux/Unix systems and shell scripting
  • Experience with with high-performance computing (HPC) and/or cloud computing platforms (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud) is a plus

What we offer

  • We offer a one-year position that can be extended to a permanent contract upon positive evaluation. .
  • You will receive a gross monthly salary within pay band 4.1-6.1 of the pay scales of the Administrative and Technical Staff. Your entry-level grade depends on your relevant professional experience.
  • You will receive meal vouchers, ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, group insurance, an income protection insurance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • We offer flexible working hours.
  • You will have 40 days of annual leave and collective leave for 1 week when the university is closed, between Christmas and New Year.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Middelheim (Middelheimlaan 1, 2020 Antwerpen) in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
