The DEI of Comedy. The reality of being an autistic, woman of colour in comedy
Lunch Talk #15 - Ria Lina (UK) - 07/03/2025
From 2020, FSW Connects (Faculty of Social Sciences) will bring a free Lunch Talk four times a year in collaboration with 'Nuff Said. During these Lunch Talks, an artist from the world of comedy, literature or music is central. The focus is on the personal and professional story of the guest, and how it takes place against a background of important social themes and events such as migration, polarization and (international) conflicts. Come along and be inspired by our unconventional guest speakers.
Ria Lina was undiagnosed when she joined the heavily male dominated comedy industry; upon being diagnosed autistic, she had to keep it a secret or risk losing work. Almost twenty years later, the landscape has changed significantly. The phrase DEI (diversity, equity & inclusion) has since become mainstream, thanks to Kamala Harris and the recent election. The arts are leading the way in redefining what ‘inclusion’ and ‘equity’ mean… or are they?
Through personal anecdotes and research, Ria will examine what being diverse means in a modern comedy world and explore whether it’s a gimmick, passing trend or here to stay.
About the speaker
Ria Lina is a touring comedian, actress and writer and has been named as one of The Evening Standard’s ‘Hottest Comedians You Should Be Watching Now’. Her extensive list of credits includes among others guesting and hosting Live At The Apollo (BBC) andHave I Got News For You (BBC). She is also a regular pundit on Sky News, BBC News, and Times Radio and is in demand for her scientific insight, confident delivery, political satire and biting wit. Ria is the only Filipina comedian in British stand-up and holds an MSc in Forensic Science and a PhD in Virology, so it’s not only Ria’s comedy that’s highly intelligent. Last but not least, Ria has taken six shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with her work tackling topics such as autism, motherhood, political correctness, feminism and racial identity.
