Centring Care: Decolonising Research and Learning with Communities of Practice.

(Post)Doctoral Workshop 23/11/2023

This event builds on the Too Far Too Close and Silences We Speak workshops in 2021 and 2022. During the Centring Care workshop in 2023, we want to support a community of engaged early career researchers to explore decolonial research practices and dive into scholar-activism. The event is designed to generate reflection on these two topics through lectures by invited speakers and presentations by fellow participants already engaging in decolonial research practices and scholar-activism.

Date: Thursday, November 23rd 2023, from 08:30 – 17:30.

Location: De Grauwzusters, Lange St-Annastraat 7, 2000 Antwerpen.

Morning session:

Dr. Swati Kamble, our first keynote speaker, will focus on intersectional reflexivity and its importance for the ethics of knowledge creation and collaborative knowledge practices. These concepts are particularly relevant when working with marginalised communities.  Additionally, she will reflect upon recognising the indigenous knowledge practices around us and how decoloniality is at the heart of rethinking what and whose knowledge counts. Dr. Swati’s lecture will be followed by a reflection moment on our research practices, organised in small groups guided by the speakers and the organisers.

Lunch and Fair:

The morning session will be followed by a fair during which some participants will share their research practices. With this activity, we aim to build and inspire communities for scholar-activism. Lunch will be provided simultaneously with the fair.

Afternoon session

Dr. Samira Azabar from BOEH!, our second keynote speaker, will focus on communities of practice. BOEH! is a feminist and antiracist action platform that advocates for the self-determination of women and girls to wear a headscarf. Dr. Azabar’s lecture will be followed by a reflection moment on doing the work of a scholar-activist.
