General information
The bulk density of bituminous mixtures, in combination with the maximum density, is determined to calculate the void content of compacted bituminous samples. It is the mass per unit volume, including air voids, of a specimen (at known temperature). Different procedures can be used to determine this parameter but in general the mass is obtained by weighing the dry specimen in air. Depending on the type of specimen the volume is obtained by weighing the specimen in air and in water or by measurement of the dimensions.
