Sara Eloy

I seek to make students aware that design is about people.

Sara Eloy is an Associate Professor in the Interior Architecture program at the Faculty of Design Sciences. She is involved in the master studio on Reuse of Modernist Buildings and the bachelor final studio. In the master studio, she challenges students to address modernist heritage alongside contemporary ecological and social sustainability values.

Her research extends to the (adaptive) reuse of African shared heritage to improve living conditions in former plantations. She employs emerging digital technologies to tackle societal issues related to inclusion and justice in the built environment, viewing them as critical for innovation. In her elective Space Syntax Methodology and Analytical Design, Sara teaches students how their designs can foster social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

She leads the Henry van de Velde research group and participates in national and international research projects. Sara complements her academic work by publishing in high-impact journals and conferences and curating exhibitions, including “Artificial Realities: Virtual as an Aesthetic Medium in Architectural Ideation” and “CLOSE to Cities and CLOSER to People,” both presented as part of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale.

Sara Eloy in Practice

Trained as an architect, Sara worked in offices such as Nuno Teotónio Pereira & Pedro Viana Botelho and Sonae. Later, as a professor at Iscte, she continued practising architecture by providing design services to public-sector organisations. Her work extends to applying research insights on extended realities and developing user experiences for user-centred design.
