The University of Antwerp opened two new buildings at Campus Drie Eiken 22 September 2016.

The new O Building (Building Gouverneur Andries Kinsbergen) houses the life sciences’ new teaching facilities. It contains eight auditoriums, two microscopy rooms, a room for practicals, a bio room and a reprography office.

Building M is home to spaces for skills training, which will be used by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and computer rooms.

Building Facades - Campus Drie Eiken Art on Campus

The Building facades by artist Perry Roberts are countless examples of 19th and 20th century photographs capturing entire populations of schools, colleges, villages, universities and regiments.

This practice is not so common today. Although we all have cameras in our pockets, when we use them the lenses tend to be pointed inward, at ourselves. The image on the Kinsbergen Building is in the spirit of these old photographs but it is a more inclusive, democratic view of the population of the university, not only teaching staff and students but technicians, office workers and cleaners.

However, it shouldn’t be read simply as an image. The piercing of the metal in order to produce the image, integrates the subjects into the very fabric of the building. It has been said that the purpose of education is to change mirrors into windows and in this building, the participants can see themselves reflected in the image but at the same time the perforations in the metal allow a view of the outside world from within.
