Laureates

A Scholarship Louis Bruyns s.J. has been awarded to :

  • LUBALA Emmanuel  (2003) from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The scholarship supported his stay at the University of Antwerp for following the doctoral programme. The subject of his doctoral thesis was “The Bursting Apart of the Postcolonial State and the Logics of Control of Space in Congo-Zaïre, the Case of the Province of South-Kivu”.
  • DEBLAUWE Isra  (2003) from Belgium. The grant enabled her to carry out field research in Cameroon, in the framework of her doctoral study at the University of Antwerp. Her research project fitted in the project “Large Simians” of the Antwerp Royal Zoological Society and the University of Antwerp. Her field work was entitled “Comparison of the Insectivore Behavior of Gorillas and Chimpanzees in South-East Cameroon”.
  • On 22d April 2008, Ms. Deblauwe took her degree of doctor of sciences (biology) with a dissertation on “Comparison of insectivory by sympatric western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees in lowland rainforest, southeast Cameroon” (promotor prof. dr. L. Van Elsacker). 
  • KABAMBA Patience (2005-2006) from Congo. In December 2008, the scholar took his doctor’s degree at Columbia University New-York with prof. S. Marysse of the University of Antwerp as his co-promotor. The scholarship supported his field research at Butembo, East-Congo. The doctoral thesis was entitled “Trading on War: Trade, Conflict and Ethnicity in the Democratic Republic of Congo”. Mr. Kabamba further specified this topic: “How did Nande traders, who managed to build and protect self-sustaining prosperous transnational economic enterprises in the absence of effective national government, apprehend the restoration of a central state power?” 
  • DJOUFACK Stephan (2008) from Cameroon. The scholarship facilitated his travel to and stay in Antwerp during his doctoral studies at the University of Antwerp. His research is on “A Description of the Vegetation Based on its Utilisation by the Large Simians and its Ethnobotanics: the Case of Dja Cameroon”.
  • On 1st Octobre 2008, Mr. Djoufack suddenly passed away during his stay at the University fo Antwerp. The Board of Directors of the Father Louis Bruyns s.j. Foundation expressed its most profound condolences upon this tragic loss.
  • ATABONGAWUNG AWUNG Tamo  (2009) from Cameroon. The scholarship enabled the candidate to follow the first year of the doctoral program in Law at the University of Antwerp, with prof. dr. George Pavlakos and prof. dr. Koen De Feyter as his supervisors. The scholar prepares a doctoral thesis on "Diamonds, Corporate Responsibility and International Law. Case Study: The Antwerp Diamonds Industry".
  • MEGERSA Kelbesa  (2010) from Ethiopia. He could start following the doctoral program at the University of Antwerp. His research proposal is entitled "The Global Financial Crisis: the Impact on Developing Countries and Their Policy Responses - the Case of Ethiopia" under the supervision of Prof. Robrecht Renard and Prof. Danny Cassimon from the I.O.B./University of Antwerp. 
  • MWANTIMWA Kelefa  (2012) from Tanzania will defend a doctoral thesis in information and library sciences on "Information Need and Support for Poverty reduction in Rural Communities in Tanzania".
  • WORKNEH Dereje (2015) from Ethiopia. As a member of the AXES research group of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Antwerp, and under the supervision of Dr. Karolien Dewael, he examined the characterization and measurement of atmospheric nanoparticles. His doctoral thesis was titled  “Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Aerosols in East African Sector”. The research project is part of his doctoral program at Addis Ababa University. The knowledge and skills are pertinent both for the research of climate change and for the study of the health risks and patrimonial damage caused by environmental pollution.

A Trends Scholarship has been awarded to  :

  • LUETETA Jean-Pierre (2004-2005) from Congo. The scholarship enabled him to stay in Antwerp and Kinshasa whilst obtaining a doctoral degree at the University of Antwerp in the area of financial mathematics. The title of his doctoral work is “Mathematical Models of Risk Assessment and Covering (Derived Products)”
  • FEREDE Tadele (2005-2006) from Ethiopia. The scholar could prepare and support his doctoral studies at the University of Antwerp.  Having been awarded a state research grant, he finished his doctoral thesis on “Economic Growth, Poverty and Environmental Degradation in Ethiopia. Analysis of Economic Policy Effects by way of a Village Computable General Equilibrium Model.”
  • NDIAYE Seydina  (2008) from Senegal. He finished the first year of his doctoral studies at the University of Antwerp with a project entitled “Impacts of the Process of Liberalizing Trade in Western Africa on Household Poverty: the Case of Senegal”.
  • DUNIA SENGA Christian  (2009-2010) from DRCongo. Prof. dr. Stefaan Marysse and prof. dr. Danny Cassimon being his promoters, Mr. Dunia took up the doctoral program at the University of Antwerp in Economics with a thesis on "Integrating the dollarization effect in the DRC external equilibrium computation: a focus on capital flows traceability".
  • SIMBO David  (2012) from Cameroon. Prof. dr. ir. Roeland Samson being his supervisor, this biologist will defend a thesis on "Eco-Fysiology of Drought Stress in the Baobab as a garden vegetable". The scholarship supported his fieldwork in Cameroon.  
  • SYLLA NDIAYE Salma (2017) from Senegal. She started a doctorate in nuclear physics on “impact flashes on Jupiter and Mars” under the supervision of Prof. Ababacar Ndao at the Department of Physics of Université Cheikh Anta Diop (Dakar). She will spend a study period at the Department of Physics of the University of Antwerp under the supervision of co-promotor Prof. Katrien Kolenberg. Prof. David Baratoux of the “Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD)” of the University of Toulouse will be the 3d co-promotor.
