The Neurology group / Laboratory of Neurobiology is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Institute Born-Bunge.
The group performs translational research on neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob's disease and Parkinson's disease) and metabolic and hereditary diseases of the nervous system. Mechanisms of neurodegeneration are explored by means of immunohistochemical techniques, light and electron microscopy.
The team has developed diagnostic techniques for detecting biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid of patients with dementia. In addition, the group has expertise in the epidemiology and genetics of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and gene-environment interaction in Parkinson's disease.
Prof. dr. Cras is also chairman of the Department of Neurology in the University Hospital of Antwerp.
