Differential appreciation and remuneration of high school teachers.
Abstract
Our modern, knowledge based environment requires more attention to quality of education. This quality of education depends largely on the skills, commitment and dedication of our teachers. To improve the quality of education the professional development of teachers is very important. That's why appreciation and remuneration of desired skills is required. During this research period, different reward models, which exist in some West European countries and the USA will be described and investigated on their possibilities of implementation in our high schools.Researcher(s)

Abstract
Central questions are: 'What are the most important similarities and differences between the local labour market in Antwerp and in Rotterdam ? and 'Which local policy interventions can contribute to a higher employment rate ?' We will try to offer actualised and convenient information. That would enable us to give recommendations for the development of the local employment by extra initiatives.Researcher(s)

Quality of labour in Flemish residential institutions. The relationship between personnel involvement, organisation of work and personnel management.
Abstract
'The White rage' symbolizes the problems of employees in the social and the welfare sector in Flanders. Our research would like to evaluate the work of educators in the youth welfare sector. We will try to find a theoretical framework in the `Sociotechnical Systems Theory' and the `Job Characteristics Model'. Within these principles, we're looking for a balance between problems in work (also called control need) and possibilities to deal with these problems (also called control capacity). The structure of organisations seems to be very important for the strain or satisfaction of their employees. Personnel management in non-profit organisations is not so developed, especially not in little organisations. The residential youth welfare institutions are very small (average 8 educators). First we select publications on the theme of labour quality in the social and the welfare sector. This descriptive dimension is important to explain the connection between the organisation of labour and personnel management. We set up an inquiry into the residential institutions of youth welfare. These quantitative part (questionnaires) will be followed by a qualitative part (interviews).Researcher(s)

Social capital and the performance of local development projects.
Abstract
This explorative, comparative study aims at understanding how the impact of creditprojects is related to the structure and functioning of local networks. Two small farmer communities in a region in Nicaragua share an important amount of characteristics (socio-economic, climatological, physical, size, composition,'), yet they behave completely different when looked at credit repayment and investment. This research tries to find answers in the local structure.Researcher(s)

Management of competence as personeel strategy in public organizations: prospects and limitations of performance appraisals as an instrument for an output orientated human resource management.
Abstract
The starting point of the research project is the idea that the quality of government can be improved. Because human capital is the most important resource for quasi every governmental organization to fulfil its assignments, personal factors determine the improvement of quality in provision of services. Recently we saw the introduction -voluntary or not- of job descriptions and competence profiles in several public organizations. Until now, however, links are seldom made between these instruments on the one hand and an integrated career policy and attached training policy on the other. The aim of this study is testing the ability of job descriptions and competence profiles to form a base for a performance oriented investigation of training demands. In connection to this, the study wants to test to what extent the results of this matching can support the career policy. The hypothesis behind this, is that it should be possible to use job descriptions and competence profiles to pursue an efficient training policy, in a way that it can also be useful to increase mobility.Researcher(s)
