Admission requirements
Prior education requirements
Applicants should hold a university-level Bachelor’s degree. This degree should be of an academic nature, as opposed to a technical or professional degree.
A degree in Medicine, (Biomedical) Sciences or Public Health gives you a good base for the Master of Epidemiology. However, if you have another academic background and feel that you would benefit from more knowledge in epidemiology, statistics and research methods to strengthen your research, you might be the right candidate as well.
Students who are still completing their Bachelor’s degree are also encouraged to apply. They have to submit an official letter in English from their university confirming that they are expected to finalise their Bachelor’s studies at the end of the current academic year. They should also submit up-to-date authenticated transcripts with their results of the previous years.
We cannot accept students with the following degrees, which we consider to be technical or professional:
- Bachelor of Agriculture
- Bachelor of Animal Health
- Bachelor of Biotechnology
- Bachelor of Education of Science
- Bachelor of Laboratory Sciences
- Bachelor of Microbiology
- Bachelor of Midwifery
- Bachelor of Nursing
- Bachelor of Nutrition
You are eligible to apply if you have an additional Master's degree.
All international students must go through the online application procedure. As a first step, the Admission Board will review your grades, your background in life sciences, research methods, epidemiology, statistics, and your motivation.
If you have a non-university bachelor's degree, you may have access to the master after completing a bridging programme (in Dutch).
A professional bachelor of biomedical laboratory technology gives direct access to the bridging programme.
Other professional bachelors need permission from the faculty to be admitted to the bridging programme.
Language proficiency
The programme is taught in English. Candidates are therefore required to demonstrate their English language proficiency.
If your degree was issued by a recognised educational institution in Belgium or the Netherlands, you do not have to provide evidence of your level of English.
You can demonstrate your English language proficiency in two ways:
- By submitting proof that you have studied at least one academic year (or 60 ECTS credits) in an English-language Bachelor's or Master's programme. The Admission Board may require additional proof of your command of English.
- By submitting your results on a language test, with the following minimum scores:
- Paper-based TOEFL: minimum 550
- Internet-based TOEFL: minimum 80
- Computer-based TOEFL: minimum 213
- IELTS: minimum overall score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6.0 for each individual component
- Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): minimum B2
Results obtained on other language tests will not be accepted.
